If you’ve ever gone bowling, there’s an option to put guardrails up along the lane so your ball avoids the gutter. The rails help guide your ball’s momentum down the lane, so you can knock some pins down.
As entrepreneurs and small business owners, we need guardrails or boundaries to protect the business, our time and energy.
Small businesses are already up against incredible odds. According to the Office of Advocacy and Small Business Data, 50 percent of businesses fail within seven years, 70 percent go out of business within nine years, and 99 percent never reach a million dollars in revenue.
So what is the point of having guardrails around your business or yourself?
Before we get to the video, let me ask you these questions:
Do you feel like there is never enough time?
Do you frequently feel burned out?
Does your business have set hours of operation?
How much time do you spend working IN your business vs. OUT of your business?
In today’s video, I talk about guardrails and how essential they are for you and your business’ success.

Now that you’ve finished watching, take a moment and reflect. Are you taking calls at night or on weekends during your family time? Are you caught up in a constant state of “startup mode?”
Setting personal boundaries helps protect your time and allows for maximized efforts when you are working ON your business.
This week, I challenge you to set up three guardrails for yourself. Write them down, type a note on your mobile device or tape a list to the refrigerator. Most importantly, stick to them! I believe that you’ll have increased focus and motivation which, in turn, will allow you to efficiently maximize the time in your business AND have a life outside of your business.
